Yates scored 25 points, pulled down 15 rebounds and recorded five steals in the Lady Spartans’ 52-39 nondistrict basketball win over Chilhowie. Whited added a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds, also snagging five steals from the Lady Warriors.
“Kaylee Yates had a monster game tonight,” said Eastside coach Barry Ruff. “Anna Whited had a strong game as well with her double-double. Those two captains stepped up and led us tonight.”
The win came over a solid Chilhowie team that beat Eastside two weeks ago at Chilhowie.
“It was a big win and it was a 22-point game with two minutes to go. They made a little run there to cut it to 12 and that aggravated me a little bit. But it’s hard to get mad because we’re so young,” Ruff said. “We’re learning how to play as a team and we’re learning each other.
“That’s why we schedule games like this: to get better. That’s why we’re going to Gatlinburg this weekend,” the coach added. “We’re playing in three tough games down there just to get better. So we’ll be ready when we come back in January to play in those district games.”
The teams battled to a 5-5 tie in the first three minutes of the contest before Eastside (5-2) used a 9-3 scoring run over the final five minutes of the first quarter to build a 14-8 lead.
The Lady Spartans outscored Chilhowie 11-10 in the second quarter to build a 25-18 halftime advantage.
Chilhowie (4-2) cut the lead to 27-23 in the first two minutes of the third quarter thanks to a 3-point shot from Rachel Williams and another basket from Leah Kestner, who finished the game with 22 points. But Eastside pulled away for good on the strength of a 10-0 run over the next five minutes.
OFF TO GATLINBURG
Eastside travels to Gatlinburg later this week to play in the Smoky Mountain Classic at Gatlinburg-Pittman.
The Lady Spartans open up tournament play Thursday at 2:30 p.m. against Bullitt Central, Ky.
