As summer is wrapping up and the school year is beginning, you may be finding yourself bored with nothing to do.

However, there are many different activities across Northern Utah that provide fun — and free — entertainment for the whole family to enjoy.

Whether you are looking for something for an inexpensive date, or something to keep yourself or the kids in your family busy, there are many free things to do in our community that we call home.

• Concerts

Whether it’s jazz, classical or country music, there are lots of free concerts available. Schools, especially elementary and junior high schools, often offer free band, orchestra or choir concerts. There are also free concerts in parks around the state, although many of these mostly take place during the summer months.

• Splash pads

Splash pads are a great way to cool down on a hot day. Many cities have splash pads located in their parks for kids of all ages to run through. Just throw on shorts or a swimsuit, grab a towel and check them out.

• Museums

Northern Utah boasts plenty of museums that are fun to see and learn from. Many cities have a history or heritage museum with information and objects from the city’s past such as the Layton Heritage Museum. There are also art museums, such as the Eccles Community Art Center in Ogden, that display modern or historic works of art. Young kids will probably also enjoy the collection of airplanes at the Hill Aerospace Museum in Roy.

• Library

Not only do libraries offer books to read, but many also have story times and summer reading programs for young kids. Many libraries around the community also show free movies a couple times a month that everyone will love, be they classic films or recent blockbusters. Or libraries also host special programs ranging from reptile shows to magicians.

• Service

Many charities in the community can use extra help. It can be a fun activity for the family to all work together, and there are many opportunities to do something you will enjoy whether it’s sorting canned goods at a food pantry or walking dogs at an animal shelter.

• Parks

Parks offer the perfect place for a picnic or for a sports game with your family. Various parks also have outdoor movie nights, farmers markets, ponds, playgrounds and much more.

• Nature centers

These are a great way to explore the outdoors and get to learn more about different animal species. The Great Salt Lake Nature Center in Farmington, as well as the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge in Brigham City, both offer fun activities, and plenty of bird watching.

• Hiking

There are numerous hiking trails across the state that offer hours of family fun with all sorts of different difficulty levels. Just be sure to wear good shoes and take plenty of water with you while you explore our state’s beautiful scenery and wildlife.

Or if hiking is not your thing, you could also go biking with your family, or try Weber State University’s Par Course trail that offers different workout stations along the trail.

This list details just a few of the many free activities there are in this great state. Many memories can be made together as a family, or with friend, and some of the best can made for no cost at all.
